Wheeler Chesemore

A respected neighbor and loved father is the memory of Wheeler Chesemore who passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday morning, March 7, 1962. Although not in the best of health the past year, he still was active around his home until just a week before his death.
John Steven Wheeler Chesemore was the son of Newton and Mary Fogo Chesemore. He was born November 30, 1871, in a log house on the farm at Rockbridge where his father and mother settled after his father returned from the Civil War. His only sister, Genie Chesemore Huffman, preceded him in death.

He married Sara Elizabeth James of Valton and they had eight children, Charles, Rollie, Newton, and Albert preceded him in death. George lives in Norwalk, California; and the three daughters are Mrs. Mary Beaty of La Valle; Mrs. Mayme Zierfuss of Richland Center, and Mrs. Mattie Shuckhart of Viola. He has 20 grandchildren, and 49 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.
For several years after they were married, the family lived in Juneau county, but his folks asked him to return to the farm when they moved to the village of Rockbridge in 1908. Wheeler was a good farmer, took an active part in the community affairs, and was respected and trusted by his friends.

In 1943 he sold the farm and moved to Richland Center. His wife died in 1948 but he continued to live in his home with his son Newton, but the last couple of years his daughters have taken turns staying with him.

Services were held Saturday at the Pratt Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Lester Mathews officiating. Burial was in the Richland Center Cemetery.
