William (Bill) F. Ahlemeyer went to his eternal home at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. He had been a patient at Columbus Regional Hospital for the last two weeks.
He was born October 6, 1924, to Victor Odell and Bertha Delzena Ahlemeyer in Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College now Indiana State University in 1947. At that point he moved to Columbus where he taught printing at Columbus High School for three years. Preferring to be an active printer, he worked as a lithographer at Avery Press for over 30 years. Then for another 10 years he was the custodian at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church. He retired the second time in 1995.
In 1972 Bill married Helen R. Ahlemeyer. Throughout their marriage their lives were intertwined in every aspect of life. They enjoyed working together and supporting each other. Together they traveled to all 50 states plus taking some cruises and touring Europe on three different occasions. He loved the Lord, his family, his church, and music.
Music was a vital part of Bill's entire life. As early as junior high he began singing with the choir and playing in the band. In high school he played in the marching band and the orchestra winning several contests, getting first place often. He also sang in a special ensemble called the Pan-American Singers. In college he continued to sing in the choir. When he moved to Columbus, the Wertz EUB church needed a choir director so he took that job for 10 years. In 1964 he joined SPEBSQSA now called the Barbershop Harmony Society. He thoroughly enjoyed singing with the chorus, participating in many district competitions, and performing in a variety of shows throughout the years. In the early 70's he directed the local Sweet Adelines chapter, a group of female Barbershoppers. He was a charter member of the Silver Tones Choir of Mill Race Center. For over 60 years he has sung with the choir at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church, formerly Wertz EUB. Nothing thrilled his soul like the sound of a perfect chord.
In addition to all the music he enjoyed bowling and was an active member of the church bowling team for many years. He loved camping with his family and the church group. He was a member of Bartholomew County Retired Teachers Association and an associate member of Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
Besides his wife, Bill is survived by his four children: William Bruce (Cindy) Ahlemeyer of Indianapolis, David Odell (Margaret) Ahlemeyer of Tucson, Arizona, Susan Lee (Carl) Ortega of Lansing, Illinois, and Timothy Allen (Joy) Ahlemeyer of Mt. Vernon, Indiana. There are 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was so proud of all his children, grandchildren, and their accomplishments. He cherished the times he was able to spend with them even though they were scattered around the country. Also surviving is a sister, Ruth Ann Pirtle of Terre Haute, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by a sister and his parents.
Pastor Steve Russell of Sandy Hook United Methodist Church will preside over the funeral which will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 07, 2011 at the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church at 1610 Taylor Road with calling one hour prior to the service.
Calling hours will be from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Myers-Reed Chapel at 3729-25th Street.
Burial will be in the Garland Brook Cemetery.
