George was married to Mary Jane Wilson in Pickaway County, Ohio, on December 19, 1850. She was the daughter of Richard and Mary Wilson.
He served his country during the Civil War in the Union Army, twice re-enlisting.
He first enlisted at Circleville, Ohio, on on April 22, 1861, serving as a private in Company B, 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, until this unit mustered out on July 17, 1861.
He re-enlisted at the same place on July 17, 1861 for three years as a private in Company A, 27th regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, mustering out at chattanooga on august 17, 1864.
He re-enlisted yet a third time at Circleville on July 15th, 1865, serving till the close of the war.
In later years, after the passing of his wife, he lived with son George at Mount Vernon, Ohio, and heart troubles and gradual fading of mental faculties required three stays in the National Military Home in Dayton, Ohio in his last decade, comprising all but about eight months. He had applied successfully for disability pension February 27, 1890.
Their records describe him as a baker, standing 5' 5" tall and of dark complexion.
