US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War he was attending Franklin College, when he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as adjutant of the 45th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1871-73) and served in the Tennessee State Senate, (1873-75). In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1905. After his term he was editor and compiler of the Government publication, "Messages and Papers of the Presidents".
