U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Yale in 1823, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commencedto practice law in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1828. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1833, 35-36, 38, 41) and a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1838-39). In 1845, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. After leaving Congress, he was director of the Union Pacific Railroad Company and practiced law until his death at age 66.
