U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1791, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in New York City, in 1794. In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress, serving until 1815. After leaving office, he was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1820-21), served in the New York State Senate, in 1822 and was a reporter of the New York Court of Chancery, (1823-26). He also was a member of the commission to superintend the construction of Sing Sing Prison, (1825-30) and a judge of the New York State circuit court, from 1832, until his death.
