Nathan Olney was born on May 5, 1779 in Simthfield, Providence, Rhode Island. His parents were Stephen olney Jr. and Martha Aldrich. He married Huldah Mahoney (daughter of Timothy Mahoney and Huldah Estes) on August 13, 1801 in Smithfield. They had seven children named Harriet, Timothy, Nathan, John, Timothy, Emeline, and John R.. Nathan brought his family to Shawneetown, Illinois in 1818. He then traveled down the Mississippi River to trade goods. A storm took his life in Natchez on October 23, 1821. Nathan's death notice appeared in a Providence, Rhode Island newspaper on January 2, 1822.
