Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award from President William H. Taft at the White House on November 23, 1912 for his actions as a 2nd lieutenant with the 6th US Cavalry, US Army, on July 4, 1919, at Patian Island, Philippines. The son of an American Civil War Union Army officer, he received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York and graduated with a commission as a 2nd lieutenant with the US Cavalry in 1904. While at West Point, he was captain of the world champion polo team. He spent nearly his entire 40-year military career in the US Cavalry, retiring in 1942 at the rank of colonel, who commanded Fort Brown, Texas. He died of heart failure at the age of 72. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "While in action against hostile Moros, when, it being necessary to secure a mountain gun in position by rope and tackle, voluntarily and with the assistance of an enlisted man, carried the rope forward and fastened it, being all the time under heavy fire of the enemy at short-range."
