LaRue County Herald News, Thursday, July 16, 1896:

James H. Elliott of near Jericho, died at his home on the 10th. Leaves 9 children. Only 1 is married, Bette, wife of Robert McDowell.

From the book, LINCOLN'S BIRTH COUNTY IN THE CIVIL WAR, by Ed Benningfield: JAMES HENRY ELLIOTT was born in LaRue County on August 29, 1841 and was likely a son of Jacob Elliott. Jacob Elliott was married to Mary Jackson in Hardin County in December of 1827. If I seem uncertain about his parentage, it is because there was apparently two James H. Elliott's. The other James H. Elliott died at Buffalo, at age 52, of consumption on August 11, 1897, and was the son of Jacob and Polly Elliott. The subject of this sketch was mentioned in Mrs. Elliott's history of LaRue County. She states that James maternal grandfather was killed by guerrillas during the war. I believe he was named Alexander Jackson.

James Henry Elliott enrolled in the Union Army on August 28, 1863 at Lebanon. He was described as 22 years old and a private in Company D, 37th Ky. Infantry. lie was described further as 5 ft. 8 inches tall, gray eyes, light hair and fair skin. He was discharged at Louisville on Dec. 29, 1864. (See Deed Book 12, Page 28, for a copy of his discharge). He married Louisa Norris on Dec. 25, 1865. They farmed in the Mt. Tabor community. James died on July 10, 1896 and is buried in the Mt. Tabor church cemetery. He is found in family 630 in the 1860 census. James filed for a pension in Oct. 1879.

I find a James H. Elliott listed in Commissioners Deed Book 1, Page 104, and it states that he was an heir of Samuel Smith. Perhaps it is the one of the two men mentioned above.
