German Nobility. He was the cadet descendant of the Wettin-Wittelsbach dynasties and heir to the throne of Saxony. Although he was the third son, he was the oldest surviving son. On October 5, 1763 he became Elector for 73 days after the death of his father Augustus III. Since birth, he had paralysis in his foot and used a wheelchair. With this physical limitation, his parents had encouraged him to denounce the throne in favor of a younger brother, but he refused. If he had denounced the throne, his son would not have been heir to the throne. He was known as a lover of fine arts and music, as well as the Enlightenment movement. He had studied religion at the University of Leipzig. He attempted to support his country's financial and political issues during the Seven Year War and with some success. He married his cousin Maria Antonia, Princess of Bavaria on June 20, 1747 and the couple had nine children. He died of smallpox. Since his eldest son was a minor at age thirteen, his brother Franz Xavier and the Dowager Electress Maria Antonia took the joint regency of the Electorate until his son was of age.
