Of Luther C. Mitchell, who was a brother to Dr. John Doak of Mitchell, a former honored citizen of Marshall and York township but now deceased, the Charleston Plaindealer says:

After an illness of several months with kidney and other chronic diseases, Luther C. Mitchell, one of the pioneer citizens of Coles county, died at his home on Maple street at four o'clock Tuesday morning.

Mr. Mitchell was a son of James A. and Esther Mitchell and was born in Washington county, East Tennessee, June 2, 1830, therefore he was in his 72d years. In 1833 his father's family removed to Charleston, and at the age of 19, Luther began farming on his own account. Two years later he migrated to California, where he engaged in mining and later went to Australia, where he remained several years. In 1860 Mr. Mitchell returned to Charleston, where he resumed his occupation as farmer and dairyman. He was the owner of 80 acres of good farm land and was successful as a cattle raiser and tiller of the soil.

On March 5, 1861, Mr. Mitchell was married to Miss H. V. Waddle of Coles county, now deceased, and seven children blessed the union of which five survive namely, W. V. Mitchell, Mrs. Rhoda Wright, Mrs. Ella Thomas, Mrs. Alice Connelly and Mrs. Kittie Davis, all of Charleston and Coles county. His second wife also survives him, as do two brothers, ? B. and A. C. Mitchell.

Deceased was a prominent member of the Presbyterian church and was highly respected as a citizen and honored as a Christian gentleman. His death removed one of the well known farmers of the county and the relatives in their sad bereavement will have the sympathy of the people of the community.
