William was the son of James H. HUFFORD and James' first wife, Mary PHILLIPS.

Before William was six years old, his parents' marriage had fallen apart, and William and his mother were back living with his mother's parents, in Delaware County, Indiana.

In 1880, William was in Liberty, Delaware Co., Indiana, living with his grandmother, Susanna PHILLIPS, 61, born in Indiana, widowed. Also in the household was "Mary Phillips," 42, born in Indiana, and noted as "widowed." In fact, Mary, was William's mother, and she was not widowed; she was divorced, and her husband had married again.

By 1900, William was married to Sarah and working as a mechanic for a bridge company. He served as a trustee for a fund raising effort to build a new Methodist church in Delaware County, Indiana. By 1910, he was working as the recorder for Delaware County.

He and his wife Sarah had no children by birth; however, they adopted two orphaned girls, sometime after 1910 and before 1918 when Sarah died: Vienna and Regina. (Vienna and Regina were biological sisters, with the original surname FLINK.)

After Sarah died in 1918, William married again, to Gertrude, who had a daughter (Roberta) from her first marriage. In 1920, William and Gertrude were living in Pike County, Indiana, and William was the proprietor of a factory.

By 1930, William, his wife, and their son had moved to Los Angeles, California, where William worked as a timekeeper at a furniture store.

Because of estrangement after his parents' marriage ended, it is likely that William never really knew his father.

William was the son of James H. Hufford, son of Daniel, son of Adam, son of Christian b. 1716 in Schwaigern.
