Born in Poland, Pinchas Lewkowicz (who changed his surname to Landers after arriving in the United States) moved to Brussels, Belgium as a young man, where he met and married Fremet Guzower. Pinchas and Fremet were hidden by some neighbors in an attic during the War where they remained until Belgium was liberated in the fall of 1944. They retrieved their sons from a convent in Louvain and the family moved in 1951, on the ship La Liberte, to the United States with their dog, Fifi. The family lived briefly in Gloversville, New York, before settling in San Diego, California.
