U.S. Congressman. Moving to Ohio, he graduated from Xavier College in 1849 and taught school in Xavier, Ohio, (1850-53). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854, and proceeded to practice law in Dayton, Ohio. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat the Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving (1875-81). An unsuccessful for re-election, he resumed the practice of law and also served as the president of the Ohio State Bar Association from 1886, until his death.
