William Eli "Bill" Green, 87, Waldo, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Russell Regional Hospital. Bill was born Sept. 22, 1920, on the family farm in Osborne County, the son of Will and Bertha (Snyder) Green. In 1936, Bill's family moved to the Twin Creek area. He graduated from Osborne High School.

Bill served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to Osborne County, Delhi township area, and started farming with his brother-in-law, George Bergsma. Bill was a farmer and stockman most all of his life. He farmed the Bergsma homestead in the Delhi Township and the Green family farm. He received the Master Farmer Award in the '60s for his progressive methods of farming.

He was united in marriage to Minnie Louise Bergsma on April 15, 1943, in Smith Center, Kansas. Minnie preceded him in death in September 1979. Bill then was united in marriage to Marjorie Keller-Palmer on August 8, 1981, in Luray, Kansas.

He attended Waldo United Methodist Church. He belonged to the American Legion for over 60 years and was past commander of the Luray American Legion Post 309. He was also a life member of Russell VFW Post 6240. He was on the school board for R 24 District for many years.

Bill's surviving family include his wife of 26 years, Marge, of the home; daughter, Roxy Ann Tate and husband Albert of Houston, Texas; stepson, John Palmer and wife Cinda of Luray, Kansas; brother, Joe Green of Luray; sisters, Marjorie Paschal of Wichita, Kansas, and Eloise Burchett of Denver; grandchildren, Patrick and Sarah Cuddy; 6 stepgrandchildren, Shalan Palmer, Tarin Palmer, Jon Palmer, Mike Palmer, Kayla Phillips and Kelly Alexander; 10 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Ed Palmer; brother, Homer Green; and sister, Doris Snyder.

A celebration of William's life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Waldo United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. the same day in Delhi Cemetery, north of Lucas. Military honors to be conducted by Russell VFW Post 6240. Visitation will be from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday evening. Memorials have been established with the Waldo Fire Department and the Luray Fire Department. Contributions and condolences may be left with Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.
