Anna M. Williams, born in 1854 in Howard County, Indiana, was the fifth child of Sarah L. (née Kimball), and Arthur E. Williams. The Williams family in 1860 was enumerated farming in Howard County, near Kokomo, and by the late 1860s had relocated to Missouri, farming in Holt County.

Anna M. Williams and David A. Tritt were married on 13 February 1870 in Holt County by the mayor of Oregon, the county seat. The marriage was brief: he died on 16 December 1870 at the age of 22. The couple's daughter Alfaretta was born a month after his death.

Annie M. Tritt and J. F. Conover were married on 6 November 1873 in Kokomo, Indiana. J. F. Conover, not identified further, is not found in the 1860 or 1870 U.S. Censuses. In Kokomo newspapers, he advertised sperm whale oil (used for lighting) in 1871, and sewing machine repair in 1872. An 1877 notice of an unclaimed property auction included a package for J F Conover at Logansport, Indiana (about 24 miles from Kokomo).

Some genealogies incorrectly identify J. F. Conover as Joseph Franklin Conover (1844-1879), enumerated in 1850 through 1870 in Shelby County, Indiana. Franklin Conover married Sarah E. Cochran, also of Shelby County, in 1871 in that county, and they had a son the following year.

Annie Conover, widow, was listed in an 1879 San Francisco, California, city directory. Annie and her daughter Alfa were enumerated in 1880 in a San Francisco boarding house as the wife and daughter of John H. Nash, a miner, age 38. (No corresponding record of marriage has been found, the courthouse there having been destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.) John H. Nash was last listed in the 1885 city directory. Anna in her mother's 1889 obituary was identified as "Mrs. Annie M. Nash, of San Francisco, California," yet when Anna remarried in 1893 she used the surname Conover.

Anna M. Conover and Archibald Bogle were married on 10 August 1893 in San Francisco. She was then 38. Bogle, age 53, was a Civil War veteran, a brevet lieutenant colonel of the 35th Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops. In the 1864 Battle of Olustee, near Jacksonville Florida, then-Major Bogle led the regiment after its colonel was wounded, and its lieutenant colonel killed. Major Bogle, shot twice (one breaking a leg), was captured, and suffered months of especially harsh treatment at the Confederate's notorious Andersonville POW camp.* After being paroled and returning to his regiment in March 1865, he was brevetted a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious service."

This marriage, too, was brief: Archibald Bogle died just 2 months later, on 11 October 1893, from "Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the Liver" with complications.† Anna Bogle on 31 October 1895 filed for a widow's pension, citing Bogle's service multiple units. In 1900, she was enumerated in the San Francisco home of her daughter and son-in-law (who had two children).

Anna Bogle and Thomas H. Spaulding were married on 8 May 1906 in Alameda, across the bay from San Francisco. (Widowed in 1901, he had lived previously in Manhattan.) He died on 17 November 1908 at the age of 57 in San Francisco.

Anna Spaulding afterward resided in San Francisco with her daughter Alfa (who was widowed in 1923) until Alfa's death in 1944. Anna M. Spaulding died on 22 May 1946 at the age of 91 in Santa Clara County (south of San Francisco), according to a death index. Her death (reportedly in San Francisco) was mentioned in an Oakland newspaper.

In 1880, he was a civil engineer in Texas; in 1890, he was living in Massachusetts.

† Anna M. Spaulding on 9 October 1916 filed for reinstatement of her pension as the widow of Archibald Bogle. She sought to establish that his death was from service-related causes.

Research note

Anna Spaulding's pension application records most probably give an account of her marriages, and possibly provide some insight into her move from Indiana to California.
