US Congressman. He was a boy of five when the family moved from south central Illinois to the northern Illinois town of Rock Island. After high school he enrolled at Williams College in Massachusetts where he graduated in 1860. He went on to post graduate school where he earned a law degree in 1862. The following year he was admitted to the Illinois State Bar and opened a law practice in Rock Island, Illinois. After twenty years in private practice he was encouraged to run for Congress, and after a difficult and exciting campaign he was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 11th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1887 to 1891, and after losing his bid for reelection in 1890 he returned to Rock Island, where he resumed his law practice. In 1897 he was chosen circuit court judge of the Fourteenth Judicial District of northern Illinois and remained in that position until his death in 1912.
