John was born in Nova Scotia, Canada to Alexander Cooper and Annie Belle [Nicholson] Cooper. He was the 7th of 16 children. At the age of 15 he migrated to the Seattle ,Washington area of the USA with his grandfather Joseph Cooper , His parents and his 10 living siblings.

He worked with his father in the family trade as a metal worker, having completed his first year of High School and metal working training before emigrating. He became a Naturalized US Citizen on 17 Apr 1939 in the Seattle, District Court .

He was wed to Grace Fay Sprague on December 22,1928. They were the parents of 7 children , the the marriage ended in 1950.

He traveled to Alaska and then resided in the Seattle,WA area for the remainder of his life .His cremated remains were received at the Washelli Columbariam which is part of the Evergreen Washelli Cemetery.
