Cato Youth Killed In Accident GEO BRANDL IS VICTIM; AUTO HITS CULVERT Zimmer Brothers Escape Injuries; Brandl Dies At The Hospital Here

George Brandl Jr age 20 of Cato Route 1 sustained fatal injuries late Sunday afternoon when the car in which he was riding with 2 companions Arthur & Leo Zimmer left the slippery highway near Clarks Mills and crashed into the concrete wing of a culvert.

Suffering from a fractured skull and a broken neck, Brandl lingered for 24 hours at the Holy Family hospital here and died at 4pm Christmas Day. Funeral services at Clarks Mills Friday morning. County cornoner Dr Gerald Rau of Two Rivers made an investigation of the accident and decided that no inquest would be necessary. He said death was accidental. Brandl, with Arthur Zimmer age 23 and Leo Zimmer age 18, brothers who reside near the Brandl home at Clarks Mills, motored to Quarry on Sunday. With Arthur Zimmer at the wheel the three started back to their homes at 3:30 Sunday afternoon.

Hit Culvert The car reached a turn in the road a mile and a half from the Brandl home. A car was approaching in the opposite direction and in turning out to avoid a collision Zimmer struck the culvert wing. Two doors were wrenched from the Zimmer car and both Zimmer & Brandl were thrown into the ditch. When the latter struck the ditch his head became wedged against a large stone fracturing his skull and causing serious neck injuries. Leo Zimmer, the 3rd person in the car, was caught by the steering wheel and was not thrown from the machine. The Zimmer brothers, neither of whom was seriously hurt, sought aid from the Joseph Krippner home near where the accident occurred. The injured youth was brought to the office of Dr Kelly at Cato and later removed to the hospital here.

Born on Farm George Brandl Jr was born on the homestead 2 August 1913. He attended parochial school at Clarks Mills and since then helped his father on the farm in the town of Cato. Survivors are his parents Mr and Mrs George Brandl Sr., 5 brothers and 5 sisters all at home.

There will be short services Friday morning at the home followed by a 9:30 service at St Mary's Catholic church Clarks Mills. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
