Alex S. Merkel , 81, of Denver, formerly of Sterling, died June 4. Services were June 9, with burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Mr. Merkel was born in La Salle on Aug. 12, 1917. He married Barbara Merkel.

He served in the Air Force as a military policeman. He was a heavy machinery mechanic. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; daughters Patricia, Judith; sons Richard, Robert; 12 grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild.
