A 17-year-old Chillicothe Rt. 3 youth was shot and killed by a Ross County sheriff's deputy about 11:30 a.m. Monday after he reportedly attempted to escape custody. Ernest Earl Alexander, Westfall Rd, was shot in the head outside the South Central Ohio Regional Juvenile Detention Center by Deputy Forrest Powell, 50, the sheriff's department said.
Alexander had been committed to the Ohio Youth Commission Monday after being found to be a delinquent child. He had been charged with a January 22 break-in at Adena High School and with aiding a March 3 purse snatching. When Alexander, handcuffed to another 17-year-old youth, stepped out of the deputy's cruiser at the detention center, the pair bolted, refusing to heed the deputy's warning to halt, the department said. Powell fired three warning shots, the sheriff's department said. His fourth shot struck Alexander in the back of the head, according to the department. The sheriff's department said its investigation is continuing.
The youth was born June 3, 1961 in Washington C.H. He was the son of Earl W. and Bertha Lowry Alexander of Chillicothe Rt. 3. He was employed at Sambo's restaurant in Chillicothe and had been an Adena student. He was married September 17, 1977, to Pamela Watters.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter, Michelle Elizabeth; two sisters, Margie Jay Alexander and Mrs. Douglas (Patricia) Good, both of Chillicothe Rt. 3; two brothers, Keith Allen Alexander and Robert Wendell Alexander, both of Chillicothe Rt. 3, and a half-brother, Daniel Carl Frances, Chillicothe. Two sisters preceded him in death.
Services were entrusted to Fishers Funeral Home of Frankfort, Ohio.
