William Lewis Blake

William Lewis Blake (1869-1925), educator, was born in Tennessee, on Oct 20 1869. His father was named Louis Blake, his mother name is unknown. William graduated from Fisk University in 1890. He and his wife, Mattie A. (Harris) Blake, were prominent Jefferson Central (Negro) School educators. His daughter; Frances Blake Wallace was a noted educator in Harrison County.

The 1910 state that he has been married 10 years to Mattie A. Blake.

William was injured in a fall on Nov 4,1925 and died from his injury on Nov 18 1925. He is interred at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Jefferson.

She and her husband, William Lewis Blake, were prominent Jefferson Central (Negro) School educators. Her daughter, Frances Blake Wallace was a noted educator in Harrison County.

Mattie died at Camp Normal Hospital in Longview, Texas on Nov 25 1947. The cause of death was hypostatic pneumonia. Mattie is interred at Ray Cemetery in Jefferson, Texas.



Frances Willard Blake Wallace

Frances Willard Blake Wallace, educator, was born in Jefferson, Texas, on Dec 09 .She was the only child of William and Mattie A. (Harris) Blake, prominent Jefferson Central (Negro) School educators. She was raised and educated in Jefferson, and graduated from Bishop College in Marshall. After she graduated, she embarked on a 43-year teaching career that included elementary, high school and college level experience.

In the 1930 census she is married to a S C Packer, a physician. This census also indicated they were both 29 years old and that they had married when they were 28 years old.

She was also a member of the Bishop faculty, supervisor of county schools, Jeanes Supervisor, principal, and Director of Education. She was listed in Who's Who in American Education, Personalities of the South, and Who's Who of American Women. She was also active in numerous civic and professional organizations. She died in May 1976
