He was born Nov. 27, 1928 in Piopolis, Illinois, a son of Louis and Mary (Wuebbels) Birkner. He married Doris Lough on Aug. 12, 1953 in Tuscola. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Mike Birkner; one daughter, Kathy Badman; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Lena Wilhelm, Liz (Bob) Schuster, Rosie (Chuck) Leonard, Bertie (Jim) Humes and Jenny (Larry) Kearns and sister-in-laws, Bea Birkner and Marie (Jerry) Duzan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
He retired from USI Chemical plant in Tuscola after 34 years of service. He then owned and operated his own mowing service in the area for many years.
