Sarah P. Bancroft was born about 1812 in Philadelphia, daughter of merchant James Bancroft, Jr. (1784-1855) and his wife Rebecca Smith (1787-1856). She is the paternal granddaughter of James Bancroft Sr. (1757-1803) of Lynnfield, Essex Co, MA and his wife, Sarah Parsons.

Sarah was widowed on August 19, 1871 when her husband died, and she survived just 8 days, passing on August 27, 1871.
