Alton C. Bay, 94, formerly of Thompsontown, died at 9:38 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Brookline Manor and Retirement Village, where he had been a resident since January.
Born July 20, 1906, in McAlisterville, he was a son of the late Samuel J. and Minnie M. (Leister) Bay. His wife, Mary M. (Frymoyer) Bay, whom he married Jan. 1, 1932, preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1996.
He is survived by a niece.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur L. Bay, and by a sister, Dora L. Bay.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He served from 1943 to 1945 as an anti-tank gun crewman, participating in the Normandy invasion. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
He was employed as a foreman for Gwen Fashions, McAlisterville for 30 years until his retirement in 1971.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown since 1933. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mifflintown, the American Legion Post No. 0177, Newport and the Disabled American Veterans.
A graveside service and interment was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Thompsontown, with the Rev. Louise L. Reynolds and the Rev. Stuart H. Lengel officiating. There wiwas no viewing.
