During the War of 1812 George Bowie was a Major. Some time in the early 1820's, he accepted an appointment by territorial governor Andrew Jackson as the first Mayor of Pensacola, Florida. Remaining one year, he moved to Alabama, settling first in Conecuh County and then in Dallas County.
