Byron W. Cadwell was the son of Horace and Julia Cadwell. He was born in New York and later moved with his family to Illinois. He was listed in the 1860-61 Northwestern University catalog as a Preparatory Student from Lake Zurich, Illinois. During the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army on August 11, 1862 and was mustered in on October 1 of that year. He served in company E of the 113th Illinois Infantry (also known as the Board of Trade Regiment). During his time of service he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. On June 10, 1864 he was captured by Confederate forces at Guntown, Mississippi and taken to Andersonville prison where he remained until September when he and others from that prison were moved to Camp Lawton in Millen Georgia. He died while at the camp, on October 31, 1864.
