Mary grew up in Georgia and came to California in 1943 after marrying her husband. She and Dan moved often during Dan's Army career but settled in Richmond, California in 1957. Mary would often say that she loved her birth state of Georgia, but her favorite city was San Francisco.
During WWII Mary worked for Safeway in the Bay Area. At the end of the war she became a "stay at home" mom advocating for her children in all their activities. She held several PTA offices including PTA President at Fairmede School in Richmond, California. In her later years, Mary quilted, did crosswords and followed her family's activities and accomplishments giving lots of encouragement and support.
Mary was the youngest daughter of Prince and Mary Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters (Winnell Seals, Ina Godbee), two brothers (Jack Collins, Carl Collins), daughter-in-law Sheryl Caviness Barksdale and several nieces.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Dona Barksdale Shaw (Walker Shaw), Dan Barksdale Jr, Dennis Barksdale (Sharon O'Brien), Dale Barksdale and Denise Barksdale; her grandchildren, Leigh Ann Shaw, Danny Barksdale, Sarah Barksdale, Katie Barksdale, Josh Barksdale (Haley), Craig Barksdale, Lexi Barksdale, Nick Barksdale, Donald Mays (Danielle), Dylan Mays and Diane Mays; also survived by several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private memorial service.
