Bentley Manor was dated to before 1300. William Hemmimg bought the land in 1830. On his death, the land and property passed to his son Richard Hemming. On the latter's death in 1891, he left the estate to his daughter Maude, who had been widowed the previous year. The 1891 Census for Scotland shows Maud and the family still living at Millfield House, Strathmiglo, but they seem to have moved to Bentley Manor shortly afterwards. Maude commissioned a stained glass window in St Mary & All Saints Church, Haselor, Alcester District, Warwickshire, in memory of her father. The stone below reads “To the Glory of God & loving memory of Richard HEMING, of Bentley Manor, born 10 Mar 1810, died 9 Oct 1891. His eldest daughter Maude CHEAPE, erected this window AD 1893.”

Maude (Mrs Cheape) became known as 'The Squire of Bentley'. She was known for her love of hunting and kept a pack of beagles in the village. Maude died in 1919, leaving the estate to her grandson Col. Leslie Gray-Cheape. Maude (Cheape) Ellis, youngest daughter of Mrs Cheape, published a book in 1926 entitled “The Squire of Bentley (Mrs Cheape): Memory’s Milestones in the Life of a Great Sportswoman” describing family life at Bentley Manor. This daughter, herself an accomplished horsewoman, lived at Bentley until her death on 8th February 1942. The house was then taken over by the War Office and used to billet prisoners-of-war. Unfortunately the building had to be pulled down in the 1950’s due to dry rot. Leslie Gray-Cheape died in 1991 and the estate passed into the hands of his grandchildren.
