While funeral services were being held for one pioneer of this community, another pioneer, Mrs. Elizabeth Horst, passed away quietly at the home of her son, Ludwig, in Java. Mrs. Horst had been ill for about a week, her condition becoming serious last Wednesday when pneumonia set in.
The deceased was a quiet person but aways kindly and friendly and was a good mother to her children.
Elizabeth Horst nee Hindemith was born August 22, 1855, at Hoffnungstal, Romania, and was baptized August 28 and confirmed on April 05, 1870, at Kloestitz. On June 21, 1874, she was united in marriage with Christian Horst at Kloestitz. This family was blessed with 14 children, nine of whom preceded the mother in death.
In 1898, the family came to the United States, settling on a farm about two miles southeast of Javaa. In 1908, her husband passed away and several years later she moved to Java to make her home with her oldest son, Rudolph and family. Some years ago, she suffered a broken hip in a fall, which left her lame since that time, but she was always cheerful and willing to do her tasks. She became ill a week ago, and grew gradually weaker, pneumonia setting in and she passed away at 1:45 p.m., Sunday, April 10, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 19 days.
She is survived by five children: four sons, Ludwig in Java, Reinhold, three miles east o Java, Adolph C, in Java, and Fred; one daughter, Mrs. Fred Dufloth of Terry, Montana; 27 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Gottlieb Kessler of Gackle, North Dakota, Philippina Weidemann in Argentina, and Mrs. Christina Schock, Java.
