Isabella was born in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Christopher and Helen Murphy Kelly. She was one of the middle children of 7. She married in Sept of 1918 to Willliam John Allan and had 6 children. Isabella came to this country in 1928 after the death of their son Christopher. The family came through Ellis Island in April of 1928 and traveled on the Translvannia from Port Glasgow. Isabella was accompanied by her sister-in-law Ann Mulgrew and her 5 children. Isabella's husband had arrived in America the year before.
