Marie Anne Knapp was the daughter of German immigrant parents, Friedrich Christian Knapp 1757 – 1826 and Marie Marguerite Schwaab 1768 – 1816. Her known siblings were: Catherine Knapp 1783; Francoise Knapp 1788; Jean Baptiste Knapp 1791; Colbert Knapp 1795 – 1876; Marie Amable Knapp 1797 – 1832; Antoine Cuthbert Knapp 1798; Joseph Knapp 1800 – 1888; Alexandre Knapp 1802; Augustus Knapp twin 1804 – 1804; Francois Knapp twin 1804; Josette Knapp 1806 and Lucy Knapp 1808 – 1845.

On July 9, 1811 Marie Anne married Pierre Mete' in Sandwich, (Windsor), Upper Canada. From this union the following known Children were born: Peter Laurence Mete' 1812; Moses Mete' 1814; Leander Mete' 1816 – 1816; Julia Mete' 1820 – 1901 and Joseph Mete' 1822 – 1826.

July 4, 1823, was a sad day for Marie Ann, her dear Pierre passed away. A burial plot was selected in the St john the Baptist Cemetery in Amherstburg, Upper Canad for his final resting place.

On Oct 4, 1824 Mary Ann became the bride of Pierre Charles Courtois/Courtway in St-Jean, Amherstburg, Essex, Ontario, Canada. Their known children are Pierre Courtois 1825; Sophia H Courtway 1827 – 1919; Joseph C Courtway Captain 1829 – 1879; Francis Xavier Courtway 1833 – 1906; Alexander Courtway 1834 – 1889 and Anthony Courtway 1837 – 1876 and Hugh S. Courtway 1838.

March 27, 1856, was a sad day for Marie, Her beloved Pierre Charles Courtois' spirit returned to God, his maker. A burial plot was selected for him at the Assumption Cemetery, Windsor, Essex County, Ontario, On March 29, 1856, Marie and her family and friends gathered to attend Pierre Charles Courtois Funeral Mass, at the internment they stood at his grave and offered prayer, as they bid him a fond farewell.

Mary, or Marie Courtway,in the 1861 Census of Canada was a Roman Catholic, widowed and living with her son, Francis,in Gosfield, Essex, Canada West.

At the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Harvey, in Matthew's Prairie, Mississippi County, Mo., on the 18th inst., Mrs. Mary Ann Courtway, aged 68 years, 7 months, and 7 days. Mrs. Courtway, whose maiden name was Nappe, was born in Philadelphia, March 11th, 1801, and since her marriage has lived in Canada and Detroit, Michigan. She was here on a visit to see her daughter, Mrs. Harvey, and her two sons, Joseph Courtway, of the "Whitcomb Hotel," and Aleck Courtway, of Morley. She was a devoted Catholic, and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery, at Villa Ridge, Ill.

A comment that was left with the transcription: From "Death Notices From Mississippi County, Missouri Newspapers 1858-1899." As Marie Ann Knapp's son, Joseph Courtway lived in Charleston, Mississippi, Missouri, the notice likely appeared in the Charleston newpaper (19 Oct 1869). She was visiting from her home in Canada and was buried in nearby Villa Ridge, Pulaski, Illinois where Joseph Courtway's infant daughter, Eva Estella, and infant son, Edmond Eugene, died and were probably buried. On 13 August 1879, Joseph Courtway died in Charleston, Mississippi, Missouri and was also buried in Villa Ridge, Pulaski, Illinois.
