Anna Mary Knowles, 83, Windy Hill Village of the Presbyterian Homes in Philipsburg, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at the retirement home. Born on Oct. 28, 1920, in Harrisburg, she was a daughter of the late George William and Blanche Irene Wilson Mumma. On Aug. 31, 1940, in Winchester, VA, she married George E. Knowles, who survives in Clearfield. She was a 1938 graduate of John Harris High School in Harrisburg. After high school she was employed by the Department of Forest and Waters and then the Department of Criminal Justice in Harrisburg. In 1963 she worked for the Philipsburg State General Hospital as secretary to the administrator and the Board of Trustees until her retirement. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Philipsburg and the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lanse. In 1989 she was appointed by then Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey to the Philipsburg State General Hospital Board of Trustees. She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Anne Knowles, of Philipsburg; a son, John Knowles and his wife, Nancy, of Philipsburg; three grandchildren, Kim and Carrie Knowles, both of Philipsburg; and Ellen Dunsmore, of State College; a great-grandson, Brendan Roach, of Philipsburg; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her generation. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilson "Doc" Mumma and Joseph Mumma; and a sister, Ruth Mumma.
