Mary Helen Ball, 103, formerly of Cosgrove and a resident at Atrium Village died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 in Hills.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 30, 2004 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cosgrove, Iowa with Rev. Edmund Dunn officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery in Cosgrove. Friends may call Thursday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City and at the church after 9AM, Friday. The Foresters will recite a rosary at 4PM, Thursday and a Vigil Service at 7PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Atrium Village in Hills.

Mary was born September 11, 1900 in Tiffin, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas T. and Catherine Burns Meade. She was a graduate of St. Peter's High School. Mary married Earl M. Ball on January 2, 1924 in Cosgrove. He died in 1983.

Mary and her husband farmed for many years in the Tiffin area, where she was raised. In her early years, Mary was active in the PTA and had been a candidate for mother of the year. She was involved in starting the school lunch program at Cosgove. In 1992, she moved to Atrium Village.

Mary was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and the National Catholic Order of Foresters, of which she was a charter member.

She loved her flower garden and fish pond, baking and cooking, and sewing and making quilts.

Mary is survived by her children, Virginia Bross and Mary Ann (Ron) Waldschmidt, both of Iowa City, Ivan (Norma) Ball of Dimondale, Michigan, William (Bonnie) Ball and Richard (Pat) Ball , both of Tiffin, Jim (Judy) Ball of Hills; her sisters, Helen Bryant of Tiffin and Marguerite (Merle) Stockman of Oxford; Her brother, Joe (Thelma) Meade of Oxford; one sister-in-law Magdalene Meade of Mt. Pleasant; 47 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter Susanne; one son Eugene; two granddaughters Linda and Sandra; one great granddaughter Barb; her son-in-law Duane Bross; three brothers Robert, Ralph and Thomas; four sisters Genevieve Mann, Alice Kuebrich, Lucile Stimmel and infant Leona.
