ELLA NUNN
Ella Andrew Nunn was born Oct. 28, 1889 at Seventy Six. At age 17 she passed the examination for a second class teacher's certificate and taught a subscription school at Mt. Union Christian Church at Seventy Six. During the winter of 1909 she attended the Teachers Normal School at Albany and received a first class certificate. She taught at three schools in Albany and during that time was married to her first husband, Blaine Campbell. She gave up teaching to stay at home with her family. Blaine Campbell died in 1923 and in 1925 she married W.H. Nunn, who died in 1942. She was the mother of seven children, John G. Campbell, Mrs.. Mildred McWhorter, Edwin Campbell and Bill Nunn, all of Albany; Mrs.. Ruby Rankin, Monticello; Mrs.. Betty Robins, Dayton, Tenn., and Mrs. Anna Mae Piercey, Atwater California.
Mrs.. Nunn was the first woman to be elected to the Clinton County Board of Education; she was elected in 1934 and served until 1938. After the death of her second husband, she served as editor of The New Era in Albany and the Pickett County Gazette in Byrdstown. She was the author of two books about Clinton County history, the second completed when she was 92.
Mrs. Nunn was also involved in many civic activities. She was president of the American Legion Auxiliary, first Worthy Matron of Albany Eastern Star No. 429 and president of the Homemakers Club. She began teaching a Sunday School class at age 14 at Mt. Union Christian Church. She taught a class at Albany First Christian Church for many years; after resigning in 1973, she served as a substitute teacher.
Mrs. Nunn died Jan. 23, 1984 at the age of 94. She will be best remembered for her rich store of memories about Clinton County, her contributions to home, church and community, and, most of all, her love of Clinton County and its people.
