Funeral services for A.N. Smith, 90, former Hawarden resident and brother-in-law of Mrs. Winona Lawton, who died Saturday at the Masonic sanitarium at Bettendorf, Iowa, where he had been a resident the past 10 1/2 years were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday at the Barnard Funeral home here.
Rev. David Graham of Hudson officiated. Masonic services were conducted by Dale lodge No. 456 of Hawarden, courtesy to Rising Star lodge, No. 496 of Primghar. Members of the Rising Star lodge acted as casket bearers. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery beside his wife.
Mr. Smith was born in Huntley, Minn., November 9, 1873. He married Hannah Lawton December 24, 1894, and they lived for many years on a farm southeast of Hawarden, leaving here in 1909.
He was in service with the Illinois Central railroad for 40 years, 15 years as general agent at Storm Lake, a number of years at Primghar and later at Gaza, Iowa, retiring in 1939.
Mr. Smith had been a Mason 69 years. He was raised to a master Mason by Western Star lodge No. 26 at Albert Lea, Minn., August 14, 1895.
His wife, Hannah, and son, Roland L., preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Leslie C. (Viola Ann) Opper of Lincoln, Neb.; an adopted son, Lawrence Smith of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Leslie C. Opper of Lincoln, Mrs. Leo L. Samson of Sidney, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Rutherford and Mrs. Walter Geinapp, all of Oelwein, Iowa, Mrs. Maxine England of Dundee, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Locke of Storm Lake.
