MISHAWAKA - Betty M. Brittain, 90, of Mishawaka, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012, in her home following a long illness. Betty was born December 2, 1921 in Mishawaka, the third of five daughters, born to John and Bessie (Neupert) Steinhauser. She grew up in Mishawaka and was a 1940 graduate of Mishawaka High School. On December 15, 1945 in St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, Betty married Dale C. Brittain. The couple made Mishawaka their home. Betty was employed for many years in the cafeteria at Mishawaka High School. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. Betty was an excellent cook and loved flower gardening. She liked watching football and looked forward to watching the Kentucky Derby each year. Betty and Dale enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing and cross country skiing. They also liked traveling and taking car rides to sight-see locally. There were many happy memories with family and friends at Big Fish Lake and vacationing at Hyuck Lake in Michigan. Betty's surviving family includes two children, Dennis D. Brittain of Michigan City and Cynthia S. Burkett of Mishawaka; two sisters, Helen Piercy of Mishawaka and Virginia Dyer of Hartford, Michigan; three grandchildren, Lucas, Daniel and Abigail Burkett; two cousins, Bernice Graham of Ottawa, Illinois and Gertrude Benkert of Germany; several nephews and nieces; and her special granddog, Bonnie Berner. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; and two sisters, Mary Jane Dickens and Ruth Lutes. Friends may spend time with Betty's family Sunday, July 15, from 2-5 pm in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be prayed at 5 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, July 16, at 10 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Private burial will take place at a later date in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Memorials are suggested to The Center for Hospice Care.
