Isabella and her younger sister Mary Stewart spent much of her teen and young adult years as a Baptist Missionary. They left from Europe as an orphans to study the Baptist Missionary teaching. Mary became homesick for Scotland and returned. Isabella remained, and traveled extensively with her final assignment in Africa, 1845-1848. It was during her mission in Africa that she met and married Leendert Byl, also a Baptist Missionary, from Holland. She was the second daughter of Lieutenant Thomas Stewart, Royal Navy of Dingwall and Isabella Beatrice MacKenzie of Scotland. She married Leendert June 26 1848 in Fernando Po, Africa. Returning to Europe, she and her husband, young son, Thomas and brother in law Wilhelm Byl left Rotterdam aboard the Henry Shelton for America, arriving in Baltimore, Sep 15, 1848 and settling in Hamilton, Ohio. After Leendert's death, she moved to Campbell, Kentucky near her daughter Jessie Johanna. Sometime after 1880, she moved to Santa Cruz, California with her oldest daughter, Isabella, remaining here until her death in 1919.
