Alpha Jean Black, 86, of Elk City, Oklahoma was born on March 27, 1927 in Elk City, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Evins and Alta Leona (Wheeler) Tosh. Jean passed away on February 21, 2014 at the Elk City Nursing Home, Elk City, Oklahoma. Jean met and married her best friend and sweetheart, Howard Leon Black on April 1, 1950 in Elk City, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on September 12, 2010. She spent many years volunteering at the Great Plains Regional Hospital and enjoyed being there to help others. Jean enjoyed doing crosswords, word searches and painting but most of all she loved raising her family and spending time with them. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elk City, Oklahoma. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Elk City, Oklahoma. Darel Doc Ware will officiate. Services are under the direction of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home, 600 W. Country Club Blvd, Elk City, Oklahoma 73644. Jean is survived by three sons; Randy French and his wife, Kelli of Blacklick, Ohio, Terry French and his wife, Betty of Sayre, Oklahoma, H.L. "Butch" Black and his wife, Jacquie of Elk City, Oklahoma; two daughters, Kay Higgins and her husband, Mike of Elk City, Oklahoma, Vicki Bishop and her husband, Phil of Elk City, Oklahoma; nineteen grandchildren; forty-nine great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Black; parents, Evins and Alta Tosh; one sister, Sandra Lou (Tosh) Taliaferro.
