Mrs. Morton H. Batchelder, 83, nee Priscilla Wellman Twombly, of Houston, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at St. Dominic's Nursing Home in Houston.
A funeral mass was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Tony Vilano officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the organist. Interment followed in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Prior to the funeral, the body lay in state in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home where her children led a vigil service Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary service.
Mrs. Batchelder was born May 5, 1920, at Waterbury, VT, the daughter of Earl Maynard Twombly and Theda Laura Wellman Twombly. She married Morton Henry Batchelder on April 24, 1942, in Barre, VT. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 1990.
She was a former resident of Fredericksburg and had been a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Mrs. Batchelder is survived by five daughters, eight sons and their spouses, including Becky and David Applebee of Chiniak, AK; Peter and Janet Batchelder, Burlington, VT; Benjamin and Fran Batchelder, Derby, VT; Daniel and Anne Batchelder, Colorado Springs, CO; Bruce and Joann Batchelder, Lake Elmore, VT; Jean LeDoux and Carol Lloyd of Gulfport, FL; Patrick and Blanche Batchelder, Kamuela, HI; Mark and Susan Batchelder, Alburg Springs, VT; Mary and Bob Detoma, Upton, MA; Faith Marchessault, Tallahassee, FL; Paul and Judy Batchelder, New Caney; John and Tracy Batchelder, Needville, and Sarah and Steve Ostrosky, Ashland, MA.
Also surviving are 48 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one sister, Rebecca Higgins of Waterbury, VT.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Batchelder was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rebekah Simms, and a sister, Emily Adams.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church or to the charity of choice.
Pallbearers included Peter Batchelder, Benjamin Batchelder, Daniel Batchelder, Bruce Batchelder, Patrick Batchelder, Mark Batchelder, Paul Batchelder, John Batchelder, Francisco De La Torre and Umberto Palmarin.
