Charley and Mary Burgett moved to Gordon, Texas in 1947. Charley worked for his aunt, Mrs. J. W. Conway as ranch manager. When Mrs. Conway died in 1950, Charley inherited part of her land. That land, along with some land he bought, was the beginning of the Burgett Ranch.

Charley and Mary joined the First Baptist Church in 1947 when they moved to Gordon. They were both involved in the activities of the church. Charley was a deacon in the church. He was, also, on the building committee when the sanctuary was remodeled in 1950.

Charley passed away March 14,1956. After his death, Mary continued to run the ranch by herself. Finally, in 1960, she came to the conclusion that it was too much for her. At that time her son and his family, Harold and Mary Lou Burgett along with their three children moved to Gordon. Harold and Mary Lou joined the First Baptist Church that same year.
