Twice widowed, Mrs. Cowperthwait died less than a fortnight before her 75th birthday. Her first husband was American patriot Captain Thomas Parcel, a Revolutionary officer who was mortally wounded during the Battle of Connecticut Farms, in present day Union, NJ. She was then 31 years old, and had also suffered the loss of their baby daughters, Lucy and Elizabeth. Although she later remarried, when she died almost half a century later, she was interred with the Captain and their daughters in the Parcel plot. Her brown sandstone stele is typical of the Federal Period, and features a weeping willow and classical tomb in its tympanum. It is the work of noted stonecarver J.C. Mooney of Union, NJ, whose name appears at the bottom.
