On the 15 April 1863, at the age of 40, he signed up for three years and began his service in Nashville as a Private, Co. H. 10 Reg’t Tennessee Infantry, Union Army.
He died 25 April, 1865 in No. 6 General Hospital, New Albany, Indiana. He was unwell for several months having attended hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky. He died of heart disease.
