Val graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Miami in 1951 and earned an associate's degree from Saint Phillips College while serving in the United States Air Force. She received an honorable discharge from the military in 1953 and enriched her life by marrying Henry B. M. Barnes.
Val devoted her life to loving and caring for her family and was actively involved in the community while she maintained a career as an administrative assistant. She retired from the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Hampton after 25 years of service, which was followed briefly by a secretarial position at Hampton University. Most recently Val volunteered many hours of her time and devoted her talents to support the Y.H. Thomas Community Center in Hampton, where she served as the Associate Director of Administrative Services and Volunteers. She was actively involved in varied community activities and local political campaigns and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Those who have been blessed to cherish Val's memory include her beloved husband of 48 years, Master Sgt. (retired) Henry Barnes; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tech. Sgt. (retired) Kevin and Glenda Barnes of Hampton and Maj. Darryl and Joselin Barnes of Okinawa, Japan; four daughters and sons-in-law, Michele Williams and her husband, Thaddeus, Robyn Barnes and her fiancé, Julius Richardson, all of Richmond, Carmen Mills of Atlanta, Ga., and Wanda Council of Newport News; 11 grandchildren; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Patrick Anderson and his wife, Melissa, of Arizona, Daniel Anderson, and Peris Anderson, both of Miami; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Rose Robinson and her husband, Johnny, Veronica Floyd and her husband, Joseph, Brenda Rolle, all of Miami, and Patricia Joseph of New Jersey; a favorite aunt, Lottie Tynes of Nassau, Bahamas; and many other loving family members and friends.
