After he graduated from high school, he joined the Army National Guard on 1 Feb, 1939. On 21 Feb. 1941 Master Sergeant Ronald Ally called to active on 19 Nov. 1944. He was promoted to 2d Lieutenant as survey officer and saw combat in France and Belgium. In September of 1946 he was appointed Captain and Military Governor of Germany. On 1 August 1950 he was ordered to Korea in the 57th Field Artillery Battalion. He was captured on or about 1 Dec 1950. He was released by the Chinese on 29 August 1953. He was promoted to Major while Prisoner of War. He spent time in and out of various Army hospitals until March 1955. Against military orders Maj. Alley was buried in his uniform.
