Enlisted in the Union Army as an Assistant Surgeon on September 24, 1863 and assigned to the 4th New York Cavalry Regiment. Promoted to Regimental Surgeon on December 5, 1864. Mustered Out of the 4th New York Cavalry on March, 29, 1865 at Winchester, VA. He than served as Acting Staff Surgeon, United States Army, and was mustered out of Federal Service in Washington, DC.
Shortly after leaving the Army he relocated to Sparta, WI where he practiced medicine. He had served as Mayor of Sparta from 1904-1905 and Postmaster from 1906 to the time of his death in 1908. He had married Mary Sheldon of West Rupert, VT and they had five children: Dr. C. M., Julia, Dr. Spencer, Mary and Alice Beebe.
