Civil War Union Army Soldier. Born in Germany, he was married to Catherine Tenn on September 28, 1851 at the German Evangelical Church of Saint John in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City, New York. They would go on to have five children together -

Catherine (June 30, 1852)
Joseph (July 3, 1854)
John (May 13, 1856)
Charles (June 12, 1858)
Anne (February 23, 1862)

He enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on September 27, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H. He was promoted to Corporal on September 20, to Sergeant on November 1, 1863, and re-enlisted on January 1, 1864. During Union Cavalry General Philip Sheridan's Spring 1864 Raid in Richmond, Virginia, he received a mortal wound in his right shoulder from an artillery shell near Todd's Tavern, Virginia (the same shell tore off the arm of Sergeant George Wispert of Company C). Brought to the United States Army General Hospital in Point Lookout, Virginia, he died there of his wounds on June 5, 1864. Originally interred in the hospital burial ground, he was eventually re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery.

On May 7, 1868 Catharine Tenn Hodapp married John Miller in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
