Osawatomie Graphic Dated Sat. Dec 16, 1893 Fatal Accident, Osawatomie, Kansas

A horrible accident happened Wednesday night at Council Grove to brakeman J. C. Roberts of this city. He went in between the engine and cars to pull a pin, in making up train 220, and was stuck by the brake beam of the tender, knocking him down & before he could get out of the way, the wheels caught his foot holding him fast, and ran over and completely severed his left leg between the knee and ankle. Very fortunately he has the constitution to withstand an accident of this nature and is getting along finely.
Mr. Roberts is the son of Judge John M. Roberts living in Paola and has been a resident of this county a great portion of the time sence he was a boy, and has many friends to deplore this fearful accident that makes him a cripple for life.
Later: Mr. Roberts died between Ottowa and Rantoul on the way to the Missouri Pacific Hospital on Thursday.
When he was placed on the train at council Grove it was reported by wire to his wife here that he was getting along all right. He was placed on a cot in the baggage car and was accompanied by his son Ed and the company surgeon at Council Grove, and was joined in Ottowa by Dr. J. D. Bryan of that place. It seems the shock to his system was greater than was realized by himself or the physicians and almost without them knowing it he suddenly expired. Mrs. Roberts, who was waiting at the depot here, to meet her husband, was wired from Rantoul that he was dead. This is a very great blow to the family and a very sad accident. Mr. Roberts was about 48 years of age, and leaves a wife and two children, Ed and Will, who are in the train service at this place. There has never been an accident of this nature more universally deployed by the railroad men of the city than this. He was always gentlemanly and unassuming, and attended strictly to his own business and had the respect and confidence of those who knew him.
Mr. Roberts was born in Sparta, Livingston County, New York, Dec 21st 1846, which made his age at the time he died 46 yrs, 11 mo., 24 days.
Funeral services will be held at the residence of the family today at 10:00 o'clock after which the remains will be taken to Paola for interment.
