Hannah Painter, a daughter of Quakers Sarah (née Haines) and Isaac Painter, senior, was born in the vicinity of Nineveh, then in Frederick County, Virginia. Records of the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting (MM), Frederick County, show her parents, siblings, and date of birth.

Hannah Painter and Benjamin "Ramy" were married on 12 October 1802 in Washington County, Maryland. Benjamin Ramey's parents in 1795 were parties to conveying a tract of land in the vicinity of Crooked Run, and Benjamin in 1799 was a witness of the will of John Painter, junior, Hannah's uncle. The couple's marriage in a Maryland county bordering Virginia may indicate parental disapproval or an elopement. Hannah was then 14 years and nearly 10½ months old; Benjamin was about 20.

The couple are reported to have been the parents of eight children—
• Elizabeth
• Franklin
• Pressley
• Walter Tanquary
• John Matthew
• Benjamin Jefferson
• Sarah Jane
• Emily

The Benjamin Ramey household was enumerated in 1810 and 1820 in Frederick County, Virginia, and in 1830 and 1840 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. In the 1840 U.S. Census, Hannah Ramey (then age 52) is likely indicated by the mark for a female aged 40 thru 49. Benjamin Ramey died about 1844 in Shenandoah County. Hannah Ramey probably also died in the 1840s. She is not found in the 1850 U.S. Census.

Notes

Parents, siblings, date of birth in: Iona Lupton, A Record of Birth and Burials for Crooked Run Monthly Meeting 1785 (manuscript), p. 8.
The Crooked Run Meeting was in Nineveh, then in Frederick County, Virginia. Nineveh became part of Warren County, when that county was created in 1836.

"Maryland County Marriages, 1658-1940," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q297-NLGV : 22 December 2016), Benjamin Raimy and Hannah Painter, 12 Oct 1802; citing Washington, Maryland, United States, clerk of the circuit court from various counties.; FHL microfilm 14,643.

Hannah Painter's parents regained membership in the Crooked Run MM in 1785, and her older siblings were received into membership the following year. Hannah would have been a birthright member by being born into a Quaker family. It is noteworthy that her 1802 marriage to a non-Quaker did not generate any Quaker records of disciplinary action.

Will of Isaac Painter, senior, 26 May 1805 (proved 2 Sep 1805): "Item. It is my will and desire that my executors do pay unto my daughter Hannah Ramey, wife of Benjamin Ramey, or release unto them the said Hannah and Benjamin and their heirs the two years rends on the plantation whereupon they now live to wit the rent for the last year and the rent for the present year — and also a new side or woman's saddle as a full compensation to her proportion of my estate at the present." (Harold Painter, The Painter Family (typescript, 1975), pp. 45-46.)
