Viola Mae Carter, 88, of Vandalia died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 1988, in Fayette County Hospital, Vandalia.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday in Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia, with the Rev. Randy Grimmett officiating. Burial was in South Hill Cemetery, Vandalia. Memorials; Haley Chapel United Methodist Church, Vandalia.
Mrs. Carter was born March 7, 1900, in Martinsville, Ind., daughter of Charles A. Martha O'Neil Baldwin. She was a member of Haley Chapel United Methodist Church. She married Howard "Nick" Carter on Nov. 5, 1923, in Vandalia. He died March 18, 1973.
Surviving are her sons, Carl of San Diego, Calif.; daughters, Mrs. Bill (Evelyn) Oliver of Vandalia and Mrs. Lloyd (Evedean) Bollinger of Millersville, MO.; brother, Jake of Carmichael, Calif.; sisters, Mrs. Lester (Jerri) File of Vandalia and Myrtle Dothager of Mulberry Grove; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Seven sons, two daughters, four brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.~~
PERSONAL NOTE: Mrs. Carter was a Sunday School teacher at Haley Chapel for many years and served as cook at the Bluff City school for sometime before it closed.

Granny was one awesome Granny. She gave us so much love and taught us about faith. She taught us so many life lessons and in my life today I remember the things she taught me and it helps me through my trying times.
